The Ruby Throated Hummingbirds have been a welcome sight at my feeders for years. This year has been busier than ever with several pair fighting for territorial rights.
As I was watching them a few days ago, while stitching away on my sewing machine, I was startled just as I looked away.
Even tho I keep my curtains half drawn on the patio doors, occasionally one will hit the window and snap, one hit full flight!
Immediately, as I lifted my head, I see him lying there, lifeless. It he alright, or has this poor fella just met his Maker?
I opened the door, bent to rescue him, when as quickly as he hit the glass, he lifted and flew away. I watched as he landed in the tree tops.
There, way toward the top of the spruce tree, he rested.
It was nearly an hour later, before he finally swooped down to the feeder to once again regain his dignity and position of hiarchy.
He is the king of his throne as he spent the rest of the day chasing the younger, less wise, hummingbirds from HIS feeder.
On occasion he would take a seat back at the top of the tree to watch as the youngsters would imitate what he and his mate had taught them.
Soon, the days will get cooler, the evenings will drop consistently below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and the hummingbirds will be gone.
They will take their flight to much warmer places for the winter, returning to us again when our spring consistently stays warm.
Get your strength now little ones, for you have a long journey coming soon enough. Until then, stay away from the windows.
Have a great weekend my fellow bloggers and readers.
We are supposed to get another couple of days of rain, but no matter.
We plan to spend it vegging at the cabin.
Until then,

I have upward of 50 Ruby Throats and Rufous' hanging out at my house for several weeks now, and I'm making over a gallon of nectar every day! Fortunately none have flown into my windows, but if the feeders are out, they will come to a window and hover till I notice them! Smart little beggars! Don't you love watching them? Oh, If I'm sitting on the deck for a while, they begin hovering around me, too, sometimes just inches from my face! I love it!
Hummers are the most amazing creatures. So small yet so strong. I'm glad the little one survived.
glad he was okay. they're so feisty!
That first photo is great! He was a little stunned wasn't he?
Hummingbirds are beautiful creatures. Glad this one didn't die from challenging his reflection in the glass!
SO envious! I see my American friends with humming bird feeders and the little dears hovering so prettily, I wish we had them here but I think it's too cold for them - they look far too extotic for England. Great shots!
Glad the hummingbird story came out to a good end. Have a nice week-end.
WOW! Awesome pictures Dar!!
Great pictures.
Oh wow and you got the male too.
If you in Aurora, have you called David Tomlinson, he is conducting survey about hummingbirds, seems like they are missing some. May be they moved your way, lol.
Anna :)
Great pictures... Hope the little one was fine. Many of my birds do that sometimes at our home --and are stunned for the longest time. Then, they just fly away!!!!
YES--they do have a long journey ahead of them....
Hugs,
Betsy
I love a story with a good ending. That is a great picture.
Great pics Dar. We had the same thing happen earlier this summer. It laid on our deck but it then flew off and sat still for quite a while before taking flight. Tough little 'hummers' aren't they!!
'love & hugs from afar'
It is always so scary when a bird hits the glass. Glad this one was ok. The first photo is awesome!
