Of Poppies, Peas, Apples

I have been yearning for spring:)  Have you?
my 2009 Poppies & Bachelor Buttons
Just when the winter is really digging in,
I would rather be pulling weeds, digging deep,
into the dirt.
Knee deep in floral bouquets, seed boxes in my lap,
deciding what will go where in the gardens this year.
volunteer Poppies....gone wild in my garden
I guess I have no choice but to learn a bit more patience.
It is, after all, only February!  Let's face it,
Spring does not emerge it's bounty of green and flowers, potted plants,
and color palettes filling every aisle of the greenhouses,
until May, at the earliest.  One week or so before
Mother's Day is the soonest our northern climes will see
such a sight as that.   Anyone living in any zone warmer than zone 3 and 4 would not begin to understand how anxious we get way up north.

We know, we wait, we imagine
until then.

Let the long wait begin.
Until then, we will continue to scour the seed catalogs,
enjoy reading our garden magazines,
wanting to try this design or that one,
for a change.,

only to
plant the same as we were taught by our
forefathers.  We know of their success so we follow by example.
We plant their way to please those who have gardened before us.
They and now I, have been growing ' organically ' all our lives.
It is Not something new...

Now,
If only I could recall how Dad grafted apple trees~
he succeeded.  I was so young and really didn't pay that much attention.
It's something I will have to try someday.  It didn't look that hard.
I know there is information everywhere,
but I want to do it Dad's way.   I wonder if he ever wrote it down?

Do you garden
in any shape or form?  A plot to dig in,
a planter to grow your tomatoes, flowers, herbs?
It's all a gardening experience.
Try it.  It will give you great satisfaction~honest!

Me?
Please excuse me, for I have some dreaming to do

until Spring breaks.

BlessYa

I love to read of your gardening and see the wonderful bounty of your harvest, but us? maybe two-three tomato plants, then they die too soon.
Great patience maker, your weather. I must admit, your life in the North Woods is too much a challenge for us, we are pansy's.

(((HUGS))) Love from down in Clermont Florida!

I live in a zone 3-4 too though the last few years we lean to the 4 more than the 3. Such a short season. By the end of August the light is already too low to do much good. We are a little more north than you.

I don't think I could survive the Northern weather.

Dad grafted too. He always cut both limbs on a slant near a bud and then wrapped them tightly and taped them but that is all I remember.

We haven't had much of a winter so I'm still expecting a freeze but then who knows. I call the little I do yard work and sure enjoy it but with my health I can only do so much then have to rest. I do admire your pretty flowers.

My garden will consist of a couple of tomato plants in pots. This year I'm going to put them in the red wagon and pull them around to the sunshine. Oh, BTW I have a jump on gardening for this year. My tomato plant has one cherry tomato on it. I am bringing the plant home with me.. I will be the first one in the neighborhood with ripe tomatoes!!!

I am so ready for Spring. Thanks for posting your pretty photos and giving us all a sweet glimpse and thoughts of Spring to come.

I wish I knew how to graph trees, but that's something I've never been around. I hope you can find out how your Dad did it. :)

Can tell we are sisters - my nose has been in the seed catalogs too. Also surfing the garden-seed-inspiration sites online. Time to pull out the seeds and do inventory before ordering.

Those poppies are lovely. The only volunteers I get are weed, but I gladly let them grow because we need green around here. I have two balconies with potted plants. This is our growing season as by the time May rolls around, the summer heat will have arrived and it only gets hotter and hotter and hotter from that point on. Wouldn't it have been lovely if your dad had written down all his garden tips and secrets. Wishing you a wonderful day. Tammy

I am not a Gardner...but I do have a green thumb or so I am told. I just do not enjoy doing it. February is a tease....enjoy your dreams...it will soon be Spring for real.

I am so ready for Spring as well...Hey, I know a guy that can graft any kind of tree and his success rate is very high...just happens to be my sweet husband! He does the grafting and I do the painting behind him....

I'll send you the info you need to graft apple trees.
I know Spring is just around the corner..

Oh yes! Ready for Spring down here. As I type I see a thermometer out the right side of my glasses which reads, "59" degrees. It seems impossible - but here it is. Spring ... sticking it's nose out from the cold. If I had your skills I would grow a big garden.

I feel seedy here, too. Totally ready to dig in, but yes, us northern folks know to respect the calendar!
