Behind the Cellar Door Brings Hope

What lurks behind your 100 yr. old cellar door?
Behind mine are....
Potato sprouts galore...that were dragged onto the deck, while I removed the long sprouts, (they will grow more), salvaged a tub 1/2 full of dried up, but yet useable sprouting tators for planting.
Our hope is to get a surplus supply of spuds for next winters use. We are planting only a quarter of these as the rest are too far gone. I feel guilty for the waste. At least each tub was less than half full. Shucks, I still feel guilty even though we shared more than half of our last falls crop. I have lived and learned this lesson before, but need reminding, I reckon. In the meantime...
Follow that tractor...
Disc that potato patch Darlin'...
Do it again and loosen that beautiful soil My Love...
There are Yukon Golds, Pontiac Reds and Burbank Whites to plant...
The 'boys' are 'gettin'er'done...Bill's taking a break and visiting our neighbor Gene who just 'happened along' on his 4-wheeler...while I planted a long row of Big Max Pumpkins for our lil' PumpkinLoves. I had time yet for a walk-about the cabin and creek. Next time I will show some pictures of what I saw and found.
Our Good Ol' Boy Gene...see the cabin peeking through the trees behind him?
Finally done after another hour in the hot 80 degree sun...it sure feels good! Down the cabin road we go (these last hills are about 1/4 of the cabin driveway)...I can hardly wait for supper to hit the pan...
Brookies from my brother, fresh caught out of the creek that runs behind his house, Brook Trout so BIG that they barely fit the largest frypan I have. A coat of cornmeal, flour, a shake of salt, pepper and cayenne and parsley, slowly fried in a bit of olive oil and real butter...mmmm, so good with homemade tartar sauce, a baked potato and fresh corn. YumYum...
Best part? The lil oysters out of the cheeks...like taking candy from a baby!

Hope you enjoyed our afternoon as much as we did. We have been blessed once again.

God Bless All Your Sunny Hearts

Hi Dar, I LOVE trout... My Daddy used to go fishing --and bring home some gorgeous and DELICIOUS trout.... Yum!!!!

Good Luck with your spuds and your punkins (as we call 'em in Tennessee).. ha ha ..... That is wonderful that you give your fresh veggies away. Doesn't that make all of that hard work worth it???

My mother used to have a room under the house which she called the Fruit Room. She kept all kinds of good stuff down there, including potatoes and other veggies. It was cool down there. One thing that I remember is that she made Fruit Cakes --and they stayed in that room all year ripening!!!!

Have a wonderful day.
Hugs,
Betsy

It looks like so much fun even though I could not imagine all the work that you put into this. The trout looks so yummy! I've never had brook trout before. Maybe I should hint to the hubby? He could catch some when he goes bear hunting in Aug!

A good ole fashioned livin'. That's what this is. Love it. Well except for the tractor...and quad. But we can overlook those.

You are a mess girl. However when you work you work, and when you cook EVERYBODY THAT AIN'T THERE GETS HUNGRY.
The fish look great, cooked just right it seems. I can smell them from here.

I remember in third grade, we put our potatoes in a dark area of the class room and watched them grow. Good luck with taters.
Love ya!

Hope your potatoes do well.. hubby planted some and not a single plant came up. Too much water from all the KY-TN rainstorms we have been having.

What's those pink twigs in the basket?

Hey! I thought cellars are for some other stuff? The stuff you put in the barrels and then bottle them? You don't brew some too? LOL

Re Ann: The pink sticks are overgrown potato sprouts...lol on the 'other stuff' and yes, we have been known to dabble in a little vishnic...a fermented fruit liqueur...
Suz: we don't eat the eyes,...and we usually cut the head off before plating...try some trout!
White Farmhouse: Try some trout too!
Joni: Welcome, I love new neighbors
Sunny: Don't give up on your potatoes...they can survive a bitter winter and still rise to the occasion...there is still hope
Rebecca, Fred and Jack: You are welcome to our slow pace of living with all the hard work, any time
Re: Janet, Betsy- Trout IS wonderful...Betsy, I am craving Fruitbread...a whole year adds to the best yet!
