showing pride in a fine potato growth, but, now,
already, it's fall, the snow has dusted the area, and melted,
the air is cold, not cool, darned right icy cold!
Everything has successfully been harvested. There is produce everywhere; in the freezer, in jar after jar on the shelves, even behind the heavy door.
It's a dark, cool to cold, creepy place for storage............
Up the creepy stairs of an old stairway that has been doubling as a cellar/cold storage area, there is so much more being saved for the long winter ahead. We usually can expect a 6 month long winter, and then some.
The bags are full of a variety of potatoes, Red Norland, pale yellow Yukon Gems, buttery deep yellow German Butterballs, and purple-skinned, white fleshed Viking Purples. These were plentiful enough to share with all of our immediate family and theirs, mine and Bill's siblings and their families, and all of our children and grandchildren. When there is abundance, we share what we don't need.
Culls of any of the produce, from cabbage leaves, chard leftovers, etc, goes to the cattle and hogs down the road. Even the potato culls will not be wasted. The deer love them....it's like free deer food which normally would go on the compost heap. That pile gets plenty of nutrients all summer, too.
My shelves are not near as full, but I did the best I could, considering. Next year will be different. For now, it looks pretty darned good to me. We haven't starved yet, and it never fails, when the going gets tough, the Good Lord always provides. I'm so grateful for that.
It's funny, but not, things have to start looking up for this ol' gals health. I should have my driving privileges back by the end of the week, the head is healing pretty good, the back is back, so I'm looking forward to a nice fall. I plan to spend some time at the cabin soon with my guy, but I'm staying off of the 4-wheeler.
That said, thanks so much to all of you who have stuck with me while I've been s l o w l y getting my bearings back. I cannot believe how patient you all are. I thank you for your prayers. The Big Guy upstairs has been making sure I take one step at a time and not turn too quickly. He instantly calls me out, if I miss behave. He sure has a sense of humor.

That was a good harvest! Thank God for your healing, and no more roll overs.
that is good to hear. :)
Always a joy at Dars Stuffings. The canning shelf brings back memories of childhood. Mama always had shelves full.
We needed a farmers mind on one of my ships. We loved popcorn in the evenings so we bought 2 50 lb bags. One was stored in a dark 'void'. When we went for the second one it had sprouted trying to grow us some more pop corn. Twas warm and damp in the void. hahaha
Great to enjoy the pictures from the north woods.

So thankful for the Lord's provision !
I still have a few carrots to dig and bring in.
What a great harvest! Nice to see that you are so prepared for winter! Yes...stay off the 4 wheeler :)
Glad you are feeling better. All the stored up food looks so pretty. I just bought Kale for the first time. Have any suggestions for cooking it? I made salad with it tonight and liked it but John didn't.
Thanks Dar for the info. on the Kale. I am going to try it. I'm sure I will like it.
Ready for the sales my friend.
Your pantry and cold storage are FULL! Glad to hear you're being easy on your back.
It's a great feeling when we finally get things caught up with from harvesting and the canner is cleaned up and put away! I finished up over the weekend! Your stuff looks good.

If you mis-behave, you SHOULD be called out. Wishing you a continued recovery. And count your blessings, you are one lucky lady!!!
Love all your pictures. The canning reminds me of our cellar full of filled jars at home. Thank you for dropping by my blog. I hope you will stop by and visit often.
