Does anyone have a clue as to what this is? Click on any of the pictures for a much closer look at this unusual specimen. Is it a sawfly of some kind? I have been searching but coming up empty.

Well let me tell you something, if you girls from the north wood cannot ID the sucker, it is an alien. (Or the Grand loves put two or three things together to confuse you!)
This must be a continuation of what is this? cause I ran across a beautiful flower and I have no idea what it is, I know that is a surprise to everyone!!!
Anyway, no earthly or heavenly or other what that sucker is.

As for your problem bug I do not know much about North American insects.
Looking at this one the nearest thing I can come up wth here is a Digger Wasp. I arrived at this as the wing cell on your image closely resembles one of our UK species.
Maybe if you can find something on wing cell structure and compare them this will identify it.

I give! I give up. By the wing and body size, it May be a Braconid Wasp...but I'm still not at all convinced.
