Post Office Call

Mom got a call from the Post Office at 7:30 a.m. Monday. She hears the clerk at the other end of the line announce, "Come get your chicks."
Yes, Chicks come in the mail when catalog ordered as my Mother does it. You can get chicks at your local feed store, but if you want a special selection as Mom did, you order them direct from the suppliers catalog. That means they are delivered like any other 'snail mail', to the post office. Until the purchaser, in this case, my Mother, picks them up, they make quite the peep-peep racket in the post office holding room.
This particular morning, however, Mom had a fasting blood draw to tend to first. She called on my brother to rescue the post office personnel from the noisy flock. Of course, the window was not open until 9 a.m., so, another delay. It was a comedy of 'could-have-been, would-have-been, should-have-beens'. Had my brother known that a 'hello' could have quickly brought a clerk to the closed window, he would have yelled. Being the gentleman he is, he decided to respectfully wait until the window opened. LOL He said they should have said to let them know when he arrived and he would have gladly taken the little peepers out of their earshot a lot sooner.
Aren't they just the cutest?
The orange ones are the Buff Orpingtons, the gray are the Wyandotes, and the brown ones are Partridge Rocks. There is one little black one with a white spot on his head. The chick company always throws in at least one exotic, and he is it. I'll be danged if I can remember what Mom thought he might be. They sure are cute...
It was such a foggy morning on my way to the farm this morning, I couldn't make out the edge of my lawn. Anyone who had smoke coming out of their chimneys for morning warmth, left an eerie picture. The smoke hung just above the treetops like there were little forest fires throughout the area. It gave me the creeps. All that panic that Moms or Mels places were ablaze just because of the low-lying fog. No fires, thank the Lord.
It made for a sleepy day. Even the chicks were napping. It gave me an excuse to lay low too today. I fell asleep in the early afternoon and was nearly late picking up Bill from work. To top it off, I got stuck between a state patrol car and a city cop on my way through town...I was being extra careful to watch my alertness.
Blue, the chick from Easter that someone dyed blue, then sold at an auction, ended up under Mom's care. He looks like I felt all day. Rather bewildered.
This is Bertha. She guards the hen house now and warns of weasels, fox, coyotes, wolves and other predators. She is a good ol' gal that rode all the way home from Texas on the floor of the truck between Mom's and my feet., without so much as a peep or a cluck. She is the farms mascot ever since 2005, the year the folks went to Texas with us. You will see her about the farm, keeping an eye on all the chicks. She Loves the warmth of the Sunshine so you will find her on the south side of the hen house or sitting under the windmill. In winter, she sits in the living room on the bench of the fireplace. She is very spoiled, indeed.
Hope you all loved the chicks and maybe a memory or two.

Aw, they are so cute! My youngest has decided she wants a chicken now. Why? I don't know. I think that maybe Donald Duck having a baby chicken for a pet may be the inspiration. Love Bertha. It is waaaay too late. I was going to say Bertha is one really fat chicken! I thought she was real!

I would have bet 10thousanddollars that you were going to post today about Mom getting her chicks. lol Aren't they just the cutest little batch of chickens ever. I especially like those little Partridge Rocks ~ they look just like baby ruffed grouse or as we call them... partridge.

Mail order chicks - I bet they never
get lost in the mail - I imagine the PO can't get
them through their doors soon enough. lol.

Mom is something else. She'll be putting a smile
on every Great Grandbabies faces for sure.

Big Bertha's still looking sharp. Love the
way Daddy touched her up. I didn't know she
spent the winters by the fireplace, too funny.

I'll catch ya later, love and miss ya, me

You had me thinking that was sure an old hen, Bertha!
WOW! yeah the memories flood in. Mama ordering chicks for the last time in 1945. I remember then the mail man brought them to the house. Of course they were all yellow, even though they were Rhode Island Reds (I think). It has been so long since Shirl was a kid.(HA!). That was the last time we lived where mama was allowed to have chickens, she had to settle for a garden only.

I have a story to write called 'My mama was 30 watts'. The story is over fifty years old, one day it will go on paper.

Brother was right, they should have said, yell when you get here! But then I know the folks did not mind the entertainment.

Gotta love this entry! HUGS for the reminder of good times past.

I just love how every year Mom says she's not going to raise a garden or chickens, yet every year she does both! Gotta love her!

Hi Dar, All of the little chicks are just precious.. Bet they did cause a 'stir' at the Post Office that morning... Funny!!!!

Bertha is a special chicken for sure!!!! And --as you said, she seems to be quite spoiled!!!!

We've had a wonderful day today at the beach... Beautiful weather after the rain yesterday (clear, sunny, breezy, warm---PERFECT)...

Hugs,
Betsy

It was that chicken with the blue tint on her head that had me confused. Then too, you mentioned that she was the "guard" who warned everyone of intruders. My memory of chickens (bamtams) that my grandfather raised was that they could make quite a raucus noise at times. Enjoyed reading this one.

~lol~ I love this baby chick story. Can you imagine the sounds in that post office. I love it. You gave me a big nostalgic giggle with this one. It puts me in mind of when my parents used to order their chicks and they came through the mail. Ahhh, makes me smile.
